Director's Statement

Nao

It is my wish that this film will encourage people to pursue their passions without accepting or settling for less. I met Kevin Masaya Kmetz in the fall of 2003, and was intrigued by his dedication to his quest: to master the Tsugaru shamisen--a Japanese three stringed lute with deep traditional roots. The film documents Kevin's beginnings in Classical Western music and Modern Composition and follows him as he climbs the ranks of Japan's Shamisen community making friends and turning heads by blending different styles from old and new; always positive, often hilarious. I hope the audience will be entertained and inspired by Kevin's wicked sense of humor and unique and exciting music of California shamisen.
